Academic excellence at Tockington Manor School

We are proud to have an exceptional record of achievement when it comes to Common Entrance Examinations at the end of Year 8. This is the culmination of how and what we teach at Tockington right from the Nursery stage. Children benefit from an approach where we teach the child, not the subject. This bespoke learning for your child is made possible by our specialist teachers educating in small classes – less than 20 in Pre-Prep and fewer than 16 children in our Prep classes.

Learning Together

We provide many opportunities throughout the school for older and younger children to learn together. Our Paired Reading happens once a term and sees classes of different ages enjoying stories together. Our Counting Cubs Club has Year 8 children visiting the Nursery to play counting games with the younger children, giving them a fun introduction to Maths later on.

Measuring Progress

Starting in Year 2 children will do an annual CAT exam (or Cognitive Ability Testing), a predominantly computer-based test developed by GL Assessment that looks at how they learn. Scores are standardised across more than 25,000 students with 100 being an average child and this gives us a starting point to measure the impact we are having in teaching your child. It also helps us to understand how they learn and tailor our approach accordingly – some children lean to verbal learning while others are more spatial. Specific assessment of their progress in Maths and English are also carried out in Year 3 – 6.

Academic excellence

Instilling a love of learning for life sets pupils up well for achieving more academically – happy children learn best! Many of our children graduate to great things After Tockington and we are immensely proud of the wide variety and calibre of senior schools our children move on to. Those with exceptional academic talents may be accepted into our Pathway Programme which gives extra experiences and interview coaching to children motivated to gain scholarships.

Technology in the classroom

We are proud to consider ourselves a leader when it comes to Computing, with some of what we are doing being used as an example in other schools. Walking around Tockington Manor School, you will notice how well-embedded Computing is throughout the curriculum. From Reception through to Year 8, every pupil has the opportunity to engage with technology to enhance and develop their learning experience.

The bank of Chromebooks at Lower School’s disposal means children can get used to using a mouse and even have a go at coding from as young as five. Pupils in Years 5 – 8 all have access to their own Chromebooks as part of our 1-1 device programme and TMS boasts a state-of-the-art Computing Suite, with Windows PCs, virtual reality (VR) headsets and a green screen.
